Proposal Name: Web Logger Analyzer
Lead/Contact: Robert Morton
Sponsor: Mike’s Software Emporium
Product Proposal Log #: 123456789___________________
Idea:
This project is designed to take one or more Apache Web Server log file and analyze it for various elements including but not limited to: number of users, web pages visited along with number hits on it, names of registered uses, number of hits per a day, etc.
Type of Project: ___Revenue Generating ___ Cost Savings
Other: Analyzing Usage_____________________
Business Imperative:
It is important to see the usage of the Intranet Support Server. We need to justify the continued use of the server.
Benefits:
We need to analyze the usage of the internal Intranet Server to see what and when it is being used. Is it a full support tool or is it replacing some of our current people. We cannot know till we see how the usage is on the server.
Financial Justification:
If it is taking on more of a support load, we may be able to keep from hiring new people or reduce current staff.
Feature Behavior:
· Number of hits on your pages, and number of visitors.
· DNS-lookup to translate IP-addresses into domain names.
· What web browser and operating system your visitors are using.
· The most popular pages.
· How your visitors are moving through the site.
· Extensive statistics day-by-day for each page on your site.
· Other sites that are linking to yours.
· Information about search engines, and what questions and keywords guided visitors to your site. You can also easily add new search engines. Something that is important, as URL's of search engines change often.
· Who Is lookup of domain names. Shows you who is the owner of a domain.
· Reports on errors, and broken links.
For full behavior expected see attached report.
As well as text entries, certain entries (usage by week, hour, etc) would be nice too see in a graphic format (pie or bar charts).
Data Needs:
Sample data file is attached. Lay out of data will be supplied later.
Timing/Implementation:
Implementation is not critical. Would like to see in the next 16 weeks.
Interested Parties:
None
Success Matrix/Review:
Factors that affect success will be completion of the above objectives. We will add features to the project a few at a time till we get to a complete state. Target dates for parts are not set yet. We will need to set down to agree on them.
Alternative Action Plan/Contingencies:
Commercial software is available at a cost that the department does not wish to expend at this time. Freeware/Open source is also available that does not meet the needs that we have.
